Ever-increasing on-board data-processing-capability requirements entail a raising hardware and software complexity that must be achieved under a strong requirement for reduced development time, and increased cost and risk control of the development process. As an alternative to the traditional mission-tailored model of spacecraft development, the SpacePDP project, realized with Planenek Italia and Sitael with funding from the Italian Space Agency, provides an experimental high-performance, open and modular hardware and software platform to be used as central payload-data processing and communication component for the various instruments aboard a satellite or exploration rover. The goal is to reduce development effort and increase product reliability through hardware and software reuse among missions.
Due to the high relevance of data-reduction methods in forthcoming missions, two such techniques based on artificial neural network models were selected and implemented by GEO-K to demonstrate the applicative and computational potential of the platform developed: dimensionality reduction of payload data and cloud detection.
